Occupational Wellness
Occupational wellness is the satisfaction you get in doing purpose driven and rewarding work that is balanced by the time you need to enjoy your life. It is work that fits your lifestyle. It is work that excites you, ignites you, and no one has to drag you to do it!
Occupational Wellness encompasses…
Achieving occupational wellness requires that we explore our occupational pathway, our needs, our wants, our talents and what brings us fulfillment and joy. It also requires that we do our work in a healthy environment, physically and emotionally, and that we earn enough money to meet our basic financial obligations. Just because the rest of your co-workers or friends may be miserable at their jobs doesn’t mean you have to be. You can work, make money and really enjoy what you're doing!
It’s important to make room to explore what is a good fit for you or what you enjoy. Many people we talk to have never had the chance to explore their occupational pathway, instead jumping into the work world based on others’ expectations or an immediate financial need. You deserve to wake up excited to do what you do for a living! That means feeling good about it, looking forward to it and telling others excitedly about what you do.
When you don’t take care of your occupational wellness…
Too many times you may take a job because you have to, you need the money and so you find ourselves saying yes to a job that brings you no joy, no sense of accomplishment, and end up feeling dissatisfied. You may even find yourself being angry often and snapping at loved ones or short with your family and friends because you are feeling like “this is not what I should be doing” or “I’m miserable here at this job.”
When you are dissatisfied with the work you do for a living, you can find yourself unhappy at your jobs, stressed, disinterested and doing the minimal work required to get by. Occupational dissatisfaction can affect you mentally, physically, financially, socially, and spiritually. In turn that affects your occupational wellness becoming a vicious cycle, and can even hold back your professional success.
You can do this. PsycleOn can help.
Many people we talk to have never had the chance to explore their occupational pathway, instead jumping into the work world based on others’ expectations or an immediate financial need. It’s important to make room to explore what is a good fit for you or what you enjoy. That doesn’t mean that you just up and quit a job that isn’t fulfilling, which may be financially detrimental to you. It means taking the time to find your passion and create a strategy to get where you want to be.
Take the time to improve your occupational wellness:
Make a list of the pros and cons of your current work. What drains you? What makes you feel good?
Set aside time to reflect on what brings you joy and what that might look like as a career
Focus on the parts of your work that generate joy or a sense of accomplishment
Expand your horizons by searching for “interesting” or “amazing” jobs and see if anything excites you
Invest in developing a new skill that moves you closer to your dream job
You don’t have to figure that out all on your own. Guided reflection, career counselors and coaches can help you figure out a path that excites you and a strategy to achieve it. Then make a plan to put it in action.
Your wellness is too important to leave it to chance!
